Healthy Schools

The objective of Healthy School is to integrate activities and actions promoting healthy lifestyles into school life. As schools are obviously among the central institutions of communities, the effects of sustained initiatives in schools have a tendency to go well beyond their walls.

The Healthy School approach, which is recognized more as a program in our region, is an essential element in terms of support for the activities organized in the schools. Partnership with the Kativik School Board is an important factor for success in the application of this program.

Alianartuq!

Alianartuq!—Come, let us enjoy life together!—is an activity that was held in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. Four young role models from Kangiqsualujjuaq (Andrea Brazeau and Julia St-Aubin) and Salluit (Larry Thomassia and Judith Naluiyuk) visited the region’s schools to promote healthy lifestyles and the importance of persevering even during difficult moments.

Nimak

Nimak—Move!—is a set of 20 cards designed for children in early primary school (grades 1 and 2). The cards are meant as a supplementary aide for teachers in creating active periods in class, without the need to rearrange the classroom. The proposed exercises are based on yoga and also include breathing exercises to promote calm and improve concentration. The cards, developed in partnership with the Kativik School Board in 2014, will be officially launched in the fall 2015.

My Schoolyard: a World of Pleasure! – Active Recess

My schoolyard: a world of pleasure! Is an aide developed by Kino-Québec. Regional adaptations were made but the kit’s primary objective remains the same: make recess more active and facilitate the task of the teachers and various interveners assigned to supervising recess.
