United for the Safety and Wellness of Our Elders
Every year on June 15th, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS) organizes the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an international initiative aimed at raising awareness about elder mistreatment and celebrating the essential role of elders in our communities.
A shared responsibility
Mistreatment of elders can take many forms—emotional, physical, psychological, or financial—and often goes unnoticed or unspoken. Whether you're a family member, caregiver, neighbour or friend, you have a role to play in making sure elders are treated with the care, dignity and respect they deserve.
2026 Campaign highlights
This year’s campaign includes a range of activities and resources to help inform, engage and mobilize communities across Nunavik:
- The Nunavik Elders Dialogue: bringing together Elders, partners, and organizations from across the region over three days, to reflect and discuss key priorities, such as:
• Elder safety and the prevention of mistreatment
• Community services and supports
• Housing and adapted living environments - Kuujjuaq Elders Breakfast: a local initiative in collaboration with the Nunavik Police Service Prevention Officer, the Kuujjuaq Elder Coordinator and local partners in Health and Social services. This pilot project creates a welcoming space to connect, share information, and promote elder safety in the community. The goal is to gradually expand the initiative by including more communities in the coming years.
- Facebook campaign: featuring information and resources regarding elder safety and community care.
