Well-being of Elders

Respecting and honouring our Elders is a fundamental value that strengthens our communities.

The IMPORTANCE of Elders

Our program is inspired by the IQI Inuit model of health and well-being, which highlights the central role of elders in preserving knowledge and sustaining cultural practices.

Elders are vital to Inuit culture, traditions, and values. As keepers of knowledge, they provide guidance on the land, traditional medicines, and essential skills, sharing these through storytelling, teaching, and speaking Inuktitut.

Reconnecting with elders is crucial for healing and cultural revitalization, particularly in addressing the impacts of colonization. As guardians of family heritage, elders provide love and security, foster harmony in communities, and guide future generations. The IQI model underscores their indispensable role in maintaining a healthy, vibrant community.

The WELLBEING of Elders

**Wellness Calendar date: Nunavik Elders Day: October 1st

“Our elders need us, too. As they age, they require our support and help with everyday tasks to ensure their well-being and safety and to live peacefully. They also appreciate when we bring them country food, especially when they cannot go hunting or fishing as often as they used to. “ (by Annie Kumarluk, on CBC, 2023)

To help foster the well-being of Nunavik elders, we must prioritise an approach that emphasizes respecting their needs and honoring their wants and choices, including when they choose to refuse assistance.

Together, we can create a favorable environment to the well-being of Elders by:

  • Listening to their thoughts and concerns
  • Ensuring our actions respond to the needs of elders
  • Encouraging elders to exercise their ability to take action.
  • Respecting and acknowledging their right to dignity.
  • Promoting their social inclusion and participation.

The SAFETY of Elders

**Wellness Calendar date: Nunavik Elders Safety Day: June 15th

Mistreatment of elders is a concern in communities worldwide, including Nunavik. However, it often remains hidden due to the sensitive nature of the issue and the reluctance of some to come forward.

Protecting elders in our community starts with recognizing signs of distress and taking action.

Raising awareness: Awareness tool for the wellness of Nunavik Elders

The wellbeing of Elders team is developing a new Action Plan for Elder Safety that prioritizes prevention, detection, and intervention strategies, complemented by yearly awareness campaigns. Our goal is to nurture a community that values, respects, and safeguards its elders, ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for all.
