Nunavik Elders Dialogue: Together for the Well-Being of Elders

The Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS) hosted the Nunavik Elders Dialogue: Together for the Well-Being of Elders, a regional gathering dedicated to strengthening collaboration around elder wellness, safety, dignity, and inclusion across Nunavik.

Taking place from June 2 to 4, 2026, in Montréal, the Dialogue brought together elders, caregivers, wellness workers, health and social service representatives, community organizations, regional partners, and decision-makers from different sectors.

Participants

Participants included elders and caregivers, as well as representatives from organizations and sectors working closely with elder wellness across Nunavik. These included organizations such as KRG, the Nunavik Elders' Committee, Makivvik, Avataq, and Saturviit; health and social service partners including the NRBHSS, UTHC, and IHC; as well as women's shelters, elder homes, and local men's and women's groups.

Main Themes of the Dialogue

The Dialogue was structured around three key themes connected to the realities facing elders and caregivers in Nunavik:

  1. Elder Safety
Participants discussed the wellness, dignity, and safety of elders, including the prevention of mistreatment, access to information and resources, and ways to strengthen community support and protection for elders and adults in vulnerable situations.

  2. Community Services and Supports
Discussions focused on services and initiatives that contributed to elder well-being, including health services, home care, caregiver support, cultural programming, community activities, and opportunities that helped elders remain active, connected, and supported in their communities.

  3. Housing, Environments, and Safe Adapted Living Spaces
This theme explored the importance of safe, accessible, and culturally appropriate living environments for elders, including housing realities, adapted spaces, accessibility, and the broader environments that supported healthy aging in Nunavik communities.

How the Dialogue Worked

Over three days, participants took part in presentations, collaborative discussions, workshops, sharing circles, and interactive activities designed to encourage open dialogue and exchange between communities and sectors.

The event created space to share experiences, identify priorities, discuss challenges, highlight successful initiatives, and strengthen partnerships across the region. The approach was collaborative and community-centered, with a strong emphasis on participation, listening, and collective reflection.

Objectives

  • Strengthen coherence and integration across services for elders
  • Reduce fragmentation by improving coordination among partners
  • Achieve concrete commitments that were collectively monitored
  • Prepare the implementation of the upcoming Regional Elders Coordination Table

Beyond the event itself, the Dialogue was intended to help build long-term momentum and strengthen regional collaboration around elder wellness and caregiver support in Nunavik.
